Bone Grafting

About Bone Grafting

What is Bone Grafting?

Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies is reabsorbed. This often leaves a condition in which there is poor quality and quantity of bone suitable for placement of dental implants. In these situations, most patients are not candidates for placement of dental implants.

With bone grafting, we now have the opportunity to not only replace bone where it is missing, but also the ability to promote new bone growth in that location! This not only gives us the opportunity to place implants of proper length and width, it also gives us a chance to restore functionality and esthetic appearance. There are many different types of bone grafting that exist. At HPOMS, we offer both Allograft (Cadaver) and Xenograft (Bovine) bone grafting material.

What Causes the Need for Bone Grafting?

The following are the most common causes for jawbone deterioration and loss that may require a bone grafting procedure: Tooth Extractions, Future Implants, Periodontal Disease, Dentures/Bridgework, Trauma (injury), Misalignment, Osteomyelitis, Tumors, Developmental Deformities and Sinus Deficiencies.

Most commonly, we will assess your need for a bone graft when Placing Implantss. In more severe bone loss cases or for some back molar implants, bone grafting may be placed utilizing a Sinus Lift to ensure implants hold. Other times, during a tooth extraction, we may determine that Socket Preservation through Bone Grafting is necessary to help preserve the jaw bone and surrounding area. With a thorough consultation, and assessment during surgery, the doctor can determine if you are a candidate for bone grafting. All of these procedures will be discussed between you and Dr. Isdith to solidify the best fit for you.
